That 'Can' Do Spirit
High Schoolers Celebrate World Stacking Record With Concert
By TOM ROBB Journal & Topics Reporter
High schoolers from both Glenbrook North and South are now in the record books stacking 59,084 cans of vegetables last week that were donated to the Northfield Township Food Panty.
Cans were picked up on Halloween. The donation was so big the township had to rent a temporary storage space to hold them all.
The giant stack, erected at Wagner Farm, was formed into the shape of two hands, one to symbolize North and one to symbolize South holding one tower of cans. The sculpture took three days to build and breaks a previous Guinness World Record set in New Zealand.
After stacking the last can students celebrated back at GBS where the fieldhouse was turned in to a music venue that would rival the Metro or House of Blues for Saturday's "Foodstock" concert.
GBS alum Patrick Stump, leader of the rock band Fall Out Boy, headlined the show open only to students.
"You guys are kind of awesome," said Stump from the stage to the 400 students in attendance. "There's been a lot of talk that this wouldn't have happened without one guy. I don't matter, I didn't do all this stuff, you did that."
Stump played for about an hour after sets from six other student bands from both North and South. Also performing on stage were rapper J. Fresh (aka Jack Ryan from GBS), Zack Gasaway and Stephen Dinanno from GBN, Knuckle Bomb from GBS, Yasmine Yousof and Alex Babbit from GBN, Boulder Smasher from GBS and Back to Basics from GBN before Stump took the stage.
The crowd was well behaved and only rushed the stage when Stump jumped down to sing "Stand By Me."
