Chemical Spill Slows I-294

Tri-State Tollway traffic was brought to a crawl Wednesday after a hazardous materials spill near Glenview.

Glenview firefighters and Illinois State Troopers responded to the box alarm hazardous materials spill this morning. According to a state police spokesman, at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, police found a truck filled with 55-gallon drums of sodium hydrosulfate pulled off to the side of the highway with one or two drums in its load leaking the corrosive chemical.

Police called in the hazardous material situation and Glenview firefighters crews responded.

Police said the scene was not cleared until 3 p.m. During that time traffic was allowed to slowly pass, though some lanes were periodically closed and at some points all traffic was stopped for several minutes at a time.

Police said there were no injuries.
