Senior Center Celebration Goes On Despite Setback

The show must go on, and it did at the Glenview Senior Center, in spite of the fact that the scheduled performer suffered a heart attack hours before the show.

On Sunday, May 4, Frank Sinatra impersonator Jack D'Amico was scheduled to perform for a sold out house of 350 people from the Glenview Senior Center at the Park Center. At 6 a.m. Sunday, D'Amico called from his hospital bed saying he had suffered a heart attack and would not be able to perform. D'Amico did provide a replacement in performer Ed Collins. Senior Center Director Joyce Pottinger said Collins was "wonderful."

Senior Center Office Manager Sheila Raffe said Collins performed hits from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and other "Rat Pack" stars and received a standing ovation at the end of his performance. The performance was part of a series of events celebrating the Glenview Senior Center's 50th anniversary. Also honored with an award prior to the show was Woodcarving Club member Manny Shellist. He carved President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address into a series of pieces of wood mounted in a 10-ft. frame.

Upcoming events at the Center include a "Super Senior" party this Friday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m., an exhibition by the Jesse White Tumblers in August and a 50th anniversary grand finale event on Friday, Sept. 12.
