Who Are Our Hometown Heroes?

Organizing is underway for this year's Glenview Independence Day Celebration Parade.

The theme for this year's parade is "Home Town Heroes" and nominations are being accepted to identify them.

Over 100 entrants are expected to participate in the two-hour parade starting on Friday, July 4 at 11:30 a.m. The route will wind its way from Our Lady of Perpetual Help school west down Glenview Road to Harlem Avenue where it will proceed south to Central Road then turning west to end at Johns Park. An "Independence Day Twilight Show" will follow at 7:30 p.m. at Glenview Park Golf Club, 800 Shermer Rd.

Two Home Town Heroes have already been identified as Grand Marshals for this year's parade in Tom and Samantha Smith.

"Samantha and Tom have both worked tirelessly volunteering their time and talents to make a lasting contribution to the Glenview community," said Elizabeth Makelim, a spokeswoman for the Glenview Park District.

Nominations are being taken for Home Town Heroes through Sunday, June 1 by the park district. An essay of less than 200 words is required to nominate someone who lives or works in Glenview and "has made a difference in the lives of others." Applications are also being accepted from groups, businesses and individuals through Friday, June 20.

Parade awards will be given in six categories for best, musical variety unit, adult group, youth group, business unit, best community service or church group, neighborhood group and a judge's choice award.

Guidelines and applications are posted on the park district's website at www.glenviewparks.org. Applications are also available at the park district's offices, Park Center, Village Hall and the Glenview Public Library.

Children from pre-school to age nine who want to participate in the Children's Bike Parade can arrive at Glenview Road and Church Street before 10:30 a.m. on the day of the parade. No advanced registration will be needed.
