New Fire Station 7 Within Budget
Glenview awarded a contract for $2,517,163 to Construction Services of Alsip to build a new Fire Station #7 near Flick Park.
The contract price includes a $30,000 contingency fund.
The new building will be 8,265 square feet in size, 12% smaller than original plans. The initial needs analysis study called for a building between 9,600 and 9,800 square feet. Chief Wayne Globerger said ground breaking would be sometime in May.
The site of the new station will be on the same site as the current Fire Station #7.
Deputy Village Manager Don Owen said that 80% of the design fees have already been paid and the project is still within its $2.9 million budget.
The village held an informational meeting for contractors in early February. Thirty-one contractors attended that meeting. The village accepted 11 bids for the work of which six qualified.
Village officials said that the building would be paid for with existing funds on hand and not with any bond financing that would increase the cost of the building with interest payments.
Firefighters have been working out of a heated warehouse next to Westbrook School near East Lake Avenue and Greenwood Avenue since last February. The Fire Department reached an agreement last summer with School Dist. 34 for the use of the warehouse. Both sides report that operations by both the school and fire department have run extremely smoothly at Westbrook.
Though the building will not receive the environmental LEED certification, it will incorporate 18 of 26 elements on the LEED certification checklist. Project architects said meeting all qualifications for LEED certifications was cost prohibitive.
