'No Idling' Sign Design Contest In Works

Elk Grove High School and village officials were expected to meet this week to kick-off a "no idling" sign design contest.

Last year Elk Grove Village officials kicked-off a campaign to discourage drivers from allowing their cars to idle unnecessarily. Mayor Craig Johnson said it wastes fuel and contributes to pollution.

Elk Grove Village Director of Health and Community Services Mike Cavallini said he will meet with Elk Grove High School officials about the contest. Elk Grove graphic design students are expected to design no idling signs during the month of February that will be hung in the spring or early summer to identify no idling zones.

Cavallini oversaw a junior high poster competition for art that would be used in flyers, other advertising and possibly village vehicle stickers to promote less idling in the village.

Even though village officials considered imposing fines for motorists who idle excessively, the choice was made to go with a public education campaign.

If an Elk Grove police officer approaches a car idling in a no idling zone, it will only be to ask the motorist to turn off the engine.
