Death By Coil Ruled An Accident
A 63-year-old man working at a metal finishing company in Elk Grove Village was crushed to death under a large metal coil.
The accident was called in to firefighters on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 3:52 p.m. from MSC Prefinished Metals, located in the 2200 block of Pratt Boulevard in Elk Grove Village's business park.
When paramedics arrived, Dennis Woods, of the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue, West Chicago, was dead.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled the death an accident and said it was caused when Woods received multiple injuries after being crushed by the coil.
Elk Grove Village Dep. Fire Chief Al Vrshek said Woods was standing near a machine that forms metal coils that are raised several feet off the ground. While the machine was operating, a coil fell on top of Woods crushing him and killing him quickly.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the death.
A spokesman for the medical examiner's office said toxicology tests used to determine if drugs or alcohol played any part in the accident would take several weeks to process.
