Another Salt Creek Clean-Up In The Books
Wildlife in and along Salt Creek through Elk Grove Village is breathing a little easier after a small group of volunteers staged a clean-up day on June 6.
Elk Grove Village resident Nick Nikola, of Friends of Critters and Salt Creek and the Salt creek Watershed Network, organized the clean-up deploying volunteers by land and by water.
"It is totally awesome that just a hand full of people in a few hours can remove so much garbage and make such a big difference in our environment," said Nikola. "I dream of the day when all people completely respect the environment we all live in, a place where clean ups won't be necessary."
A group of six volunteers gathered at Elk Grove High School and made their way along the creek toward Devon Avenue cleaning up a full yard of debris.
Among the volunteers were Mt. Prospect father and son Jim and Ryan Brock. Ryan is a Cub Scout. The duo took to the creek in a canoe removing trash and debris in the water.
Since 1995 Nikola's group has led 28 clean-up days in Elk Grove Village along the creek removing 70 yards of garbage.
He said the creek remains a vibrant natural habitat.
The Salt Creek Watershed stretches from around Lake Cook Road on the north, south through Rolling Meadows and Elk Grove, into the suburbs of DuPage County.
