The Artists Association of Elk Grove is hosting Art Centre 2008 in October. The juried art show deadline is Aug. 21. The juried exhibit will be open to all fine artists within a 150-mile radius of Chicago. All work must be original and completed within the last two years. Benefits & Fundraisers

The 1st annual Corey Diamond Memorial Fund FUNdraiser will be held Friday, Aug. 8 at Arlington Bowling Lanes, 3435 N. Kennicott Ave., Arlington Heights from 6:30-11 p.m. The event includes dinner, dessert, open bowling, Baggo and other games, raffles, prizes. Registration forms can be downloaded from the Corey Diamond Memorial Fund website at www.coreydiamondmemorialfund.org or at the event. The Corey Diamond Memorial Fund was created in memory of Corey Diamond who was killed July 23, 2006 while traveling as a passenger in a car that was hit by a U-Haul truck that ran a red light while being pursued by police. Corey was 16 years old, and had just completed his sophomore year at Buffalo Grove High School. Proceeds from this event will provide funding for local music, art, and community service programs.

The Historic Methodist Campground of Des Plaines hosts a car show/fundraiser on Sunday through Aug. 31, from 2-6:30 p.m. The fundraiser includes People's Choice awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy), food, an Olympic Size swimming pool, children's moon jump, vendor and swap spaces, RC truck racecourse. The Aquasprites synchronized swim team at the Lattof YMCA will perform two fundraising synchronized swim shows entitled "Wet and Wild" Friday & Saturday, Aug. 8-9, at the Y, 300 E. Northwest Hwy., Des Plaines. Ticket fee. The Aquasprites Synchronized Swim Team and Masters Team performs water routines to music, with costumes and lights.

Elk Grove-based Kenneth Young Center's 21st Annual Golf Outing and Luncheon will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13 at Bloomingdale Golf Club. Registration and continental breakfast is set for 6:15-7:15 a.m., followed by tee times with a shotgun/scramble format starting at 7:30 a.m. Games and drawings will be played on the course during lunch. Tickets include breakfast, green fees, golf carts, goody bag, lunch buffet & more. KYC specializes in counseling for individuals and families, in-home support coordination, and assessment/rehab for those with mental illness. The Schaumburg Fire Department may put the fire out, but their dedication to the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a flame that will continue to burn. The firefighters will be filling their boots to fight neuromuscular diseases on August 15 and August 23 as part of the nationwide Fill-the-Boot campaign to benefit MDA. They will be collecting donations from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. On August 15, firefighters will be located at the intersection of Algonquin and Meacham roads on August 15 and Roselle and Schaumburg roads on August 23. Dropping a donation into a firefighter's boot will help MDA provide wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices. Donations also help fund research, clinics, support groups and summer camp.

Clubs & Organizations

The Festival Chorus of Harper College is seeking area singers to take part in the fall/winter concert season. The 70-voice community chorus will be performing Handel's "Messiah" and a selection of much-loved holiday carols at its annual holiday concert Sunday. Dec. 7, in Harper College's Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals are Monday evenings 7:30-10 p.m., beginning on Aug. 18 in Room P202 at Harper College in Palatine. Des Plaines-based Paul Lindblad Choristers will host Choir Camp 2008, a unique 11 day choir day camp August 4-15, in Mt. Prospect. Registered participants so far include children from several North and Northwest suburbs including Des Plaines, Prospect Heights, Mt. Prospect, and Palatine. Attendees will receive training in: vocal technique (breathing, posture, etc.), stage craft, stage training, improvisation, musicianship (sight singing, music reading, etc.), spatial relations and self-awareness. Camp is open to children 3rd grade and up and culminates in an informal concert/demonstration to be held on Friday, Aug. 15. The August meeting of the Northwest Suburban Astronomers will feature "The Birth of the Universe" by Dr. Satish Desai, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. In this talk, Dr. Desai, a physicist at Fermilab, will explain how the tiny and fleeting world of subatomic particles has shaped the vast and eternal universe in which we live. Join us on Friday, August 15 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoffman Estates Park District Community Center, 1685 West Higgins Road (at Huntington Boulevard), Hoffman Estates, (in rooms 105/106) for this talk. There is no cost to attend.

The Indian Trails Public Library in Wheeling will welcome Alex Brooks, master dog trainer, for a dog training seminar on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public. Brooks is the owner of the Alex Brooks Canine Center in Des Plaines. His seminar, ìTraining To Be Top Dog: Guiding Your Pet To Good Behaviorî will cover a variety of behavior-related issues including how to train an aggressive, timid or overactive dog; basic commands; ending excessive barking; leash training; tips for purchasing a dog; the differences between pet shops, private breeders and shelter dogs; understanding your dogís body language, and how to introduce a new dog into the home or to an existing dog. St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, Prospect Hts., will offer Bible Study programs this fall. Two programs are planned: "The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible" is a 24-session Catholic study program of 73 books of the Bible. It will be offered Monday evenings at 7 p.m. or Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. There is a fee for a workbook and the classes begin Sept. 15 (Monday) or Sept. 17 (Wednesday). "Matthew: The King and His Kingdom" shows how Jesus builds on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. This class is recommended for those who already have an overall knowledge of the Bible. It will be offered on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Begins Sept. 16 (Tuesday) or Sept. 17 (Wednesday). Workbook is extra. Participants may attend a Preview and registration program Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. or Sunday, Sept. 7 at 9:30 a.m. Information and registration are also available through the parish rectory at 847-255-7452. Schools

Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School (AGBMS), 9300 Capital Dr. in Wheeling, invites the community to be a part of its ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. The new facility will be the first ìgreenî building in Wheeling, thanks in part to a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. Attendees will see what school officials are doing to help take care of the environment, as well as learn about the programs they offer for children ages 2-12.
