Harper Student Takes Place On College Board

Carlos Borro, 40, a "non-traditional" student at Harper Community College, has been appointed to the college's board of trustees, filling the seat left vacant by the recent death of Patrick Botterman.

He was sworn in during the Tuesday, Apr. 22 board meeting.

Borro's term will run through the spring 2009 board election. Borro has served on the Student Senate and was the student representative on the Wellness and College Assembly committees. He was elected student trustee in April 2007. He recently pushed for increased community college funding at a regional state budget hearing, lobbied legislators in support of the college's bachelor degree pilot program, and launched a blog to improve communication with Harper students. A current Palatine resident, Borro worked for a computer consulting company in Maryland before moving to Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a master's from the University of Maryland. In 2005, he began additional coursework in the paralegal field and will participate in the school's May 22 graduation.
