Bryant Weber, a senior at Elk Grove High School, is a man on a mission. Weber is working toward his Eagle Scout ranking. For his project, he has chosen to give back to the community.
"I'm collecting gently-used baseball equipment for a little league group on the south side of Chicago," Weber said.
As a varsity high school baseball player, who plays first base, Weber believes that everyone should have a chance to play and that is why he is working to improve the lives of underprivileged children in the south side of Chicago.
"Baseball contributes to a healthy life by keeping kids active and teaching them important life lessons such as goal setting, hard work, fair play, and teamwork," said Weber.
Weber has been collecting baseballs, wood or metal bats, baseball gloves, baseball cleats, catchers equipment and helmets throughout April. Flyers passed out at scout meetings, church and to the high school baseball team have helped to get the word out.
Arrangements can be made for pickup/delivery by calling 847-824-0054. The deadline is Apr. 26 because the league begins playing May 1. Weber's other accomplishments include being listed on the honor roll, high school park district baseball and Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts.
What has Weber learned from this Boy Scout experience and the project?
"A well planned project can make a difference in many people's lives. Anyone can help make a difference. The Eagle Scout Award is the highest available to youth members of the Boy Scouts of America. It represents many years of dedicated effort, and the successful completion of a long process which started when the young man becomes a Boy Scout. It is a demonstration of how people, working together, can truly help mold a young man with a solid sense of leadership, citizenship, and responsibility."
