Healthier Choices For Students
Due to the increasing number of children nationwide that are dealing with greater health issues due to obesity, Elk Grove Township Elementary School Dist. 59's wellness committee updated the school board Monday on programs that have been, and will be, implemented into the district so students can make better eating choices.
According to statistics compiled by district staff, nine million children between the ages of 6-19 are overweight; and one-fifth of U.S. children are likely to be obese by 2010, with an even higher percentage in Illinois.
During the 2006-07 school year, Dist. 59 organized the wellness committee, developed a wellness policy and shared gathered information with the community.
This school year, fitness equipment was installed at Holmes Jr. High in Mt. Prospect, and now students at all three junior high schools have the ability to remain or get into shape.
Also, the district implemented a new physical education curriculum that focuses on fitness.
In regards to nutrition, schools in the district began offering "healthy" staff snacks, provided "healthy" choices of food at concessions, and provided nutritional information for families in the district's school newsletter.
The lunch program this year is different than past years. Cafeteria employees have reduced the fat in some of the food, provided more whole grain options, controlled the portions of food each child receives and ensured healthier calories.
Next year, the district plans to expand the wellness committee for more building representation, increase the opportunities for physical activity, and continue to educate families so this lifestyle continues when the students come home each day.
School Dist. 59 serves residents in Des Plaines, Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, and Mt. Prospect.
