Car Struck By Train Along Central Road

Central Road between River and Wolf roads was closed by Des Plaines police yesterday (Thursday) morning after a motorist reportedly drove around a railroad crossing gate and was struck by a Metra commuter train.

According to police, the unidentified driver of the car suffered only minor injuries after the car was struck. He was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment.

Metra spokesman Tom Miller said inbound train 104 struck the car at 7:10 a.m. at the Central Road crossing near Carlow Drive. The North Central Line train ran about 35 minutes late into Chicago. The following train, 106, also ran 20 minutes late but service was back on schedule for following trains. Metra's North Central Line travels through Des Plaines making stops in nearby suburbs at Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Prospect Hts., O'Hare Airport, Rosemont and Schiller Park.
