Police On Lookout For Cumberland Area Burglars

Des Plaines Police Chief Jim Prandini says he is confident that those responsible for burglarizing homes in the Cumberland neighborhood and other parts of the city will eventually be caught. Until that time, however, he is asking that homeowners be on the look out for unusual behavior as his undercover officers search for clues.

Approximately 10 homes in Des Plaines' Cumberland area north of Golf and Wolf roads have been burglarize since before the holidays, said Prandini.

And within the last 10 days, more break-ins have been reported on the city's west and south sides.

"Mostly small items that are easier to conceal have been taken," explained Prandini yesterday (Tuesday). "In some cases laptops and flat screen TVs have been stolen. We're doing some canvassing of neighborhoods and surveillance to try to apprehend the offenders." Prandini added that his officers are working with other police departments to determine if there are links to the crimes.

"A good portion of the break-ins are done in the early evening or late afternoon when the burglars can see if someone is home by observing if lights are on. We're asking people to make it appear that they are home by leaving their lights on and a car in the driveway."

The Des Plaines Police Dept. has received numerous tips from residents in the Cumberland area who have noticed suspicious activity.
