Blast Charges Against DP Man

A Des Plaines man is facing several charges related to an alleged bombing incident that occurred on Jan. 16.

Des Plaines police allege Richard Bilik, 33, of the 1700 block of S. White St., detonated an improvised explosive device in the doorway of a Des Plaines apartment on Saturday, Jan. 16 at about 11 p.m. Bilik was charged with one count of aggravated arson, one count of residential arson, one count of possession of an explosive, one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

Local police, the Cook County Sheriff's Bomb Squad and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raced to the scene after the reported blast that caused major damage to the door of the apartment in the 1700 block of E. Oakton St.

One man, David Lazar, 42, whose address is in the same building where the blast occurred, was transported to Lutheran General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Also listed as victims were Daniel Vargas, 36, of the 1400 block of Forest Ave., Des Plaines, and Louis Baus, 35, of the 2900 block of Curtis St., Des Plaines. Vargas and Baus were not reported as injured.

Bilik's court date is set for Friday, Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. at the Cook County courthouse in Skokie.
