Malcolm Mlodoch Art Exhibit Opens At History Center

The Des Plaines History Center recently announced the opening of a new exhibit of oil paintings and drawings by Des Plaines artist Malcolm Mlodoch.

Mlodoch has been a professional artist for 27 years and works in the museum exhibit field. Mlodoch's paintings and drawings feature views of Des Plaines including the downtown area, the Des Plaines Theater, residential streets, and other familiar sights. The paintings were created between 1980 and 1983 when Mlodoch was a teenager. Many of the places in his work are no longer in existence, such as the Des Plaines Mall, or greenhouses on Oakton Street.

"They were an attempt to represent the world around me, the local scenes and landscapes, familiar to me from my years living in Des Plaines, and which were fast disappearing," stated Mlodoch about his work. "The work of early French Impressionists were a big influence on me at the time, and I was emulating their practice of representing the cities and villages they called home. I also worked as they did, painting or drawing on the spot, working outside in a direct response to the scene, instead of working from photos or from memory in the studio."

Mlodoch's paintings are on display in the History Center's Visitor Center, 781 Pearson St., through May.
