DP Releases Final Building Activity Report Of Down Year

The end-of-year figures prove that 2009 was definitely a down year for building activity in Des Plaines.

During 2009, a total of 2,756 permits for various building-related projects with a valuation of $39.6 million were issued by the city compared to 2,988 in 2008. The valuation of 2008 projects was $69.1 million. Most permits in 2009 were issued for roofing, fencing, plumbing and sewer work. Permits for those projects generated $872,591 in fees for the city compared to $1,057,135 in 2008.

According to the city's annual report of the Community & Economic Development Dept., only two new commercial projects were done in 2009 compared to nine the previous year. Commercial alteration projects in 2009 totaled 42 compared to 70 in 2008. The total worth of the new projects was $22.4 million and $19.9 million for commercial alterations.
