First Casino Permit Fees Paid To City
The first of what will become a sizable chunk of new casino-related money---perhaps $2 million or more---has found its way to the city of Des Plaines' treasury.
Midwest Gaming and Entertainment, LLC, paid the city a total of $1,646 on Jan. 4 for fees to begin the process of seeking land use approval for its new 140,000 sq. ft. casino and adjacent parking garage on River Road north of Devon Avenue. Seven hundred and seventy dollars was for Midwest's Planned Unit Development (PUD) fee and another $220 for its fee for zoning text amendment consideration. A few days later another $656 came to the city for Midwest's subdivision application fee.
When Midwest obtains city permits to begin demolition of two or three buildings on the site, hundreds of thousands of more dollars will be paid. When permits are obtained for construction, fees paid to the city could total as much as $2 million, one city official has estimated.
