Kimmelman Named Chippewa Principal
Des Plaines Elementary School Dist. 62 Board of Education appointed Cumberland Elementary School Principal Leah Kimmelman to the Chippewa Middle School principalship, effective July 1, 2010.
Kimmelman has served as principal of the preschool through fifth grade elementary school since 2005. She began her teaching career as a seventh grade teacher at Jack London Middle School in Wheeling. Prior to coming to Dist. 62, she was an assistant principal at Hawthorn Elementary School in Vernon Hills and taught sixth grade Language Arts at Maple School in Northbrook.
As an educational leader of a diverse student population comprised of 11 regular education and 11 self-contained special education classrooms, Kimmelman introduced, implemented, and lead school-wide participation in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) network. She collaborates with staff using student achievement data as a standard of professional teaching practices and decision-making.
Kimmelman earned a bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Kansas. She holds master's degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum from Northeastern Illinois University and North Park University, respectively. Kimmelman will earn a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership/Superintendent from Argosy University in May 2010. She resides in Northbrook.
