Cops: Couple Burgles Home As Kids Wait

By TOM ROBB Journal & Topics Reporter

A Des Plaines couple remained behind bars yesterday (Thursday) charged with burglarizing an apartment in the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago last Sunday evening while their three young children sat outside alone in a waiting van.

A silent alarm brought Chicago police to an apartment in the 4100 block of N. Pulaski Rd., said Cook County State's Attorney's spokesman Andy Conklin.

Outside the apartment, police found a van with three unaccompanied children, ages two, eight and nine, and saw a broken window in the apartment.

Inside the apartment, Conklin said police found Stanley and Sandy Miller of 85 Dover Dr., Des Plaines, parents of the children who were waiting in the van.

Reports say the Millers attempted to tell police they lived in the apartment but when asked to show proof, neither could give police the apartment's address, said authorities.

Police then took the Millers into custody. Conklin said each is charged with one count of burglary.

Neither Conklin, the Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services nor Chicago police were able to say what happened to the children after their parents were taken into custody by the Journal & Topics press deadline yesterday (Thursday).

The couple remained in custody in lieu of $75,000 bond ($7,500 cash) for Stanley and a $50,000 bond ($5,000 cash) for Sandy. Their next court date is on Monday. Nov. 16 in Chicago.

Illinois Dept. of Corrections records show Stanley Miller was paroled from the Robbins Correctional Facility after one year of a two-year sentence on Sept. 3, 2009 for theft.

Conklin said Sandy Miller is currently on probation for retail theft and also has a conviction for drug possession.
