Candidates Line Up To File For February Primary

By TOM ROBB Journal & Topics Reporter

Monday was the first day for candidates to file petitions for placement on the Feb. 2, 2010 primary ballot for township, county, state and federal offices. Many candidates in the Journal & Topics Newspapers area did just that.

The race for U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk's (R-10th) old seat in Congress is heating up as the Highland Park native turns his sights to the U.S. Senate.

Republicans William Cadigan of Winnetka, Elizabeth Coulson of Glenview, Robert Dold of Kenilworth, Dick Green of Winnetka and Paul Hamann of Lake Forest and Democrats Julie Hamos of Wilmette and Dan Seals of Wilmette all filed petitions to see their names on the primary ballot.

The 10th Congressional Dist. also has a central committeeman's post for each political party. Democrats Lauren Beth Gash of Highland Park, Bill Brandt of Winnetka and Daniel Pierce of Highland Park have all filed petitions to appear on the ballot for that post. The district includes a small portion of Des Plaines and Niles and larger sections of Mt. Prospect, Prospect Hts., Arlington Hts. and communities north to Wisconsin and the North Shore.

As of Monday, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-9th) was the only candidate to file in her district for that post though several challengers have announced their intent to run.

Two have filed petitions to run for the 9th Dist. Central Democratic committeeman: Carol Ronen and William Marovitz, both of Chicago.  The 9th District runs from Des Plaines on the west to Lake Michigan on the east.

Filing petitions for seats in the Illinois House were incumbents Rosemary Mulligan of Des Plaines (R-65th), Mark Walker of Arlington Hts. (D-66th), Angelo "Skip" Saviano of Elmwood Park (R-77th) and Lou Lang of Skokie (D-16th). Lang also submitted petitions to appear on the ballot as Niles Township Democratic committeeman.

Other committeeman filing petitions were Joseph Hedrick of Morton Grove for Niles Township Republican committeeman and Rosemont Mayor Bradley Stephens for Leyden Township Republican committeeman.

Democrats running for Cook County commissioner in the 13th Dist. were incumbent Larry Suffredin (D-13th) of Evanston and primary challenger Democrat John Michael Keefe of Skokie.

In the 9th Cook County Dist. incumbent Commissioner Peter Silvestri (R-9th) of Elmwood Park filed petitions to hold on to his seat against potential challenger Democrat Cary Capparelli of Chicago.
