Firefighters Control Blaze
Firefighters made quick work of a small townhouse fire last Friday in unincorporated Des Plaines that left of one of five connected units uninhabitable but the other four unscathed.
The blaze started in an upstairs bedroom in a townhouse in the 8600 block of Gregory Lane last Friday at about 11 p.m.
Firefighters from the City of Des Plaines, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge and Morton Grove assisted North Maine Fire Protection Dist. firefighters in quickly suppressing the blaze by 11:30 p.m.
North Maine Fire Marshal Arnold Witzke said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation but said there appears to be no foul play.
Damage is estimated at $75,000. Witzke said fire damage was contained to the upstairs bedroom where the fire started. Firefighters punched a hole in the roof to ventilate the fire. There was also smoke damage to the upper floor.
Witzke said there were no injuries to residents or firefighters. He said when firefighters arrived on the scene the three residents who lived in the unit had already exited and were safely staying with neighbors.
More than 40 firefighters responded to the "code four" alarm Friday.
