Wednesday Storm Slams City

Power Outages, Downed Trees, Branches Sweep Across DP

Trees were uprooted and branches strewn throughout a swath of central Des Plaines Wednesday afternoon as a ferocious 15-minute storm swept through the area.

No injuries were reported, however, the storm undoubtedly left residents---already battered by high temperatures, heavy rainfall and the threat of flooding---jittery. There were a few power outages reported.

What had been a sweltering day with mostly blue skies turned ugly at about 3 p.m. Wednesday when the storm swooped down on the local area that included a part of Mt. Prospect, a large section of Des Plaines, Rosemont and communities to the south.

According to Howard Moser, Des Plaines Public Works acting director of Facilities and Forestry, the hardest hit area of the community was between Lee Street and River Road south of Algonquin Road all the way to Devon Avenue.

Crews handled one call of part of large tree falling on a house at 1645 Riverview St., and another tree downed on two parked cars on the 1400 block of Circle Street.

As of Thursday, Public Works crews were dispatched to various locations of the city clearing streets of fallen tree limbs and chipping the wood into small pieces.
