QUICK
CHANGE
A man in his 20s conned the clerk of Dollar Tree out of $100 on Sept. 4. He came into the store at about 8 p.m. and asked for change for a $100 bill. He began asking the clerk for several changes of money, until she became confused and called for her manager. When he approached the counter, the man and a woman who joined him, fled the store. An audit of the drawer showed the loss, according to the police report.
SCAM
ATTEMPTED
A Des Plaines couple reported an attempted scam the afternoon of Sept. 3. Someone called their home and claimed to be their grandson. The caller told the victims that he was in trouble in Montreal and needed $4,000 wired to him. The man called several more times, including while the officer was at the home, and told the victims to wire the money to him from a local Wal-Mart. The couple contacted their grandson who was at work in Orlando, Flor. and had not been to Canada.
DOG
RESCUED
Police rescued a German shepherd from an abandoned house in the 1400 block of East Forest Avenue. Officers were called to the home at noon Sept. 4 by a neighbor who said the house had been vacant for several months. Police found windows and doors open at the residence, and saw the dog stick its head out of an open rear window. Officers opened an unlocked rear door and the dog ran out; police captured the animal in the yard. The dog was taken to Northwest Animal Hospital for treatment. Police are still looking for the previous homeowners for citations.
DRUG
CHARGES
Jazel T. Gabriel, 25, of 5708 N. Artesian Ave., Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, and tinted windows at 12:41 a.m. Sept. 4. Police stopped him in the 200 block of South Elmhurst Road for the alleged equipment violation. During a search, police allegedly recovered a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and a glass pipe. He was also served an outstanding warrant from Cook County.
Joseph K. Khan, 25, of 7206 Crain Ave., Niles, was charged with possession of cannabis and no front registration plate at 12:26 p.m. Sept. 2. An officer pulled him over in the 2000 block of Miner Street for the alleged registration violation. During a consent search, police allegedly recovered a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana from his pants leg.
Walter G. Freeman, 29, of 429 Sword Way, Bolingbrook, was charged with possession of cannabis and no seatbelt. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped in the 9000 block of Potter Road at 11:44 p.m. Sept. 3 for his alleged safety violation. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to having marijuana and officers recovered a box containing two suspected marijuana cigars.
Jason W. Polka, 21, of 375 N. Mt. Prospect Rd., Des Plaines, was charged with possession of cannabis at 12:35 a.m. Sept. 6. He was the passenger in a car police stopped in the 1200 block of East Miner Street for allegedly changing lanes without signaling. After a name check, officers served him an outstanding warrant from McHenry County for retail theft. During a search, a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana was allegedly found inside his shoe.
An 18-year-old Mt. Prospect man was charged with possession of a controlled substance at 1:45 a.m. Sept. 7. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped in the 1400 block of East Algonquin Road. During a search, police allegedly recovered a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine from his sock. The driver of the vehicle, David Rodriguez-Ramirez, 23, of 1968 W. Algonquin Road Rd. #15A, Mt. Prospect, was charged with no valid driver's license and served an outstanding warrant from Schaumburg for failure to appear.
DUI
CHARGES
Jose A. Martinez, 19, of 4311 N. Sacramento Ave., .Chicago, was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, blood alcohol content more than .08 percent, illegal transportation of alcohol, no valid driver's license, improper signal, and loud muffler. An officer stopped him at 12:53 a.m. Sept. 7 in the 600 block of East Touhy Avenue for the alleged equipment violation. Martinez allegedly had several open cans of beer in his car. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests and later recorded a .169 on a breath test.
Richard J. Powroznik, 31, of 308 N. MacArthur Drive, Mt. Prospect, was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving with a revoked driver's license. Police stopped him at Central and Mt. Prospect roads at 12:56 a.m. Sept. 7.
ALCOHOL
CHARGES
Police took the alleged buyer and seller of alcohol into custody after the transaction at 9:46 p.m. Aug. 28. They charged Thaddeus J. Compall, 19, of 740 S. Fifth Ave., Des Plaines, with illegal possession of alcohol by a minor; they charged Gurkaran Singh, unknown age, of 1172 Burnham St., Carol Stream, with illegal sale of alcohol to a minor. An officer saw Compall leave 7-Eleven, 1143 S. Lee St., allegedly carrying a case of beer. The officer stopped his vehicle at Algonquin Road and Center Street and determined all the occupants were allegedly under the age of 21. Police recovered the beer and a bottle of wine from the vehicle. Officers then returned to the store where Singh allegedly admitted to selling the beer to Compall.
An 18-year-old Des Plaines man was charged with criminal damage to property and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor at 2:56 a.m. Sept. 6. He allegedly threw an egg at a squad car driving in the 1600 block of Everett Avenue, striking the windshield. The officer located him in a home in the 1800 block of Linden Street where he allegedly had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.
Robert G. Foreman, 20, of 512 Ida Court, Mt. Prospect, was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and intoxicated walking in the roadway. He allegedly stumbled out into the street in front of a squad car in the 1100 block of Oakwood Avenue at 4:38 a.m. Sept. 7.

BICYCLES
Two unlocked bicycles were taken from a yard in the 1600 block of Orchard Street between 7 p.m. Sept. 2 and 3 p.m. Sept. 3.
BURGLARIES
AND THEFTS
Someone broke into a desk at a business in the 1500 block of Ellinwood Street between 5 p.m. Sept. 2 and 11:30 a.m. Sept. 3. They took about $250 in cash from the drawer.
Jewelry valued at $1,100 and $50 cash were taken from a house in the 100 block of East Fremont Avenue between 11:340 a.m. and noon Sept. 5.
A window was broken and a global positioning system taken from a black 2007 Honda Accord in the 3900 block of River Road between 9 p.m. Sept. 4 and 6:20 a.m. Sept. 5.
Someone broke a window and took a radar detector from a white Toyota Celica in the 600 block of West Westmere Road between 7 p.m. Sept. 4 and 7:30 a.m. Sept. 5.
A lock was cut off a red 2004 Freightliner trailer in the 1800 block of South Elmhurst Road between 10 p.m. Sept. 4 and 7 a.m. Sept. 5. The trailer contained 50-pound bags of food flavoring and none were taken.
Someone took a video game system and a television from a home in the 2100 block of Nimitz Street between 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sept. 5. A houseguest who was moving from the residence is suspected in the theft, police said.
Jewelry and credit cards were taken from a home in the 3100 block of Patton Drive between 7 and 9:10 p.m. Sept. 5.
An mp3 player, a cellular telephone, and a wallet containing a driver's license, a debit card, and $5 cash were taken from an unlocked red 2006 Dodge Charger in the 1700 block of South Wolf Road. The burglary occurred between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Sept. 6.
About $10 in change and the ashtray were taken from an unlocked purple 1997 Toyota Rav-4 in the 700 block of Dulles Road between 3 p.m. Aug. 27 and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
A .38-caliber revolver, a .38-caliber pistol, and jewelry were taken from a home in the 3100 block of Stillwell Drive between 4:50 and 9:50 p.m. Sept. 5.
Someone broke open a tool container at a construction site near the Tri-State Tollway and Dempster Street between 3:30 p.m. Sept. 4 and 6 a.m. Sept. 5. They took tools valued at more than $11,000.

REPORTS
A window was broken on a blue 1998 Ford Explorer in the 1800 block of South White Street between 2:20 and 3:45 p.m. Sept. 3.
Someone broke a window on a gray 2007 Hyundai Elantra in the 100 block of East Fremont Avenue between 10:50 and 11:54 p.m. Sept. 4.
Four tires were punctured on a silver 2004 GMC Canyon in the 1400 block of East Touhy Avenue between 11 a.m. Aug. 26 and 3 p.m. Sept. 3.
Someone toilet-papered trees, cut covers on a fire pit, a grill, and a pool ladder, cut a rope swing, and turned over lawn furniture in the 110 block of South Cora Street. The damage occurred between 11:45 p.m. Sept. 5 and 5:30 a.m. Sept. 6.
A tire was slashed on a gold 2002 Cadillac Escalade in the 700 block of West Algonquin Road between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Sept. 7.
Someone broke a house window in the 300 block of Brentwood Drive between 5 p.m. Sept. 5 and 10 a.m. Sept. 6.
A sign for Kathleen Drive Condos was broken between 9 p.m. Sept. 5 and 4 p.m. Sept. 6 in the 700 block of Kathleen Drive.
