Grants To Pay For More Soundproofing

Some residents living in the Northwest suburbs near O'Hare Airport will sleep a little easier in the coming months as $18 million in grants for soundproofing area homes was announced last week.

The O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) announced the grants on Friday, July 11. Some soundproofing work on a number of single and multi-family homes in Park Ridge began earlier this summer.

This round of grants is earmarked for Park Ridge, Bensenville and Schiller Park.

"Right now 75 homes in the northern portion of Park Ridge have qualified and are receiving sound proofing," said Ald. Donald Bach (3d) of Park Ridge in a press release from the ONCC.

"Our residents are grateful to ONCC, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the City of Chicago for their dedication and hard work to mitigate aircraft noise in our community."

The ONCC has worked to insulate 6,100 homes to date since they were formed in 1995.

They plan to have another 6,000 completed by the end of the O'Hare Airport Modernization plan that includes several planned runway additions and expansions.

The ONCC serves 27 communities in Cook and DuPage counties.
