Parks Land Long-Awaited Property
A piece of property long coveted by the Des Plaines Park Dist. to expand the acreage at Arndt Park was purchased last week for $385,000.
According to Executive Director John Hecker, park officials have wanted to acquire the property at 1946 White St. for many years. It was the only privately-owned parcel within Arndt Park and officials had hoped that one day it could be used to expand the parks open area.
About a year ago, explained Hecker, the park district approached the owner of the property about a possible purchase. Six months later, the owner called the park district to say she was interested in selling.
"The timing was very appropriate," said Hecker. "She was able to sell in a down market and we wanted the property." He added that the park district was willing to pay more for the property than three appraisals said it was worth. The highest appraised value was $379,000, Hecker said.
The property is located on the east perimeter of Arndt Park next to its fieldhouse.
As part of the sales agreement, the woman will be allowed to remain living in the house until the end of August at no charge. After that, a park employee may reside there in order to keep a close watch on Arndt Park at night.
The sale was closed on May 6.
