City Forming Own Weight-Loss Contest
Des Plaines residents interested in shedding some pounds will soon be able to participate in a new citywide program aimed at promoting weight loss and better health.
Ald. Carla Brookman (5th) and Mayor Tony Arredia are organizing a program, similar to a contest that promotes better health among local residents.
Similar to the television show "The Biggest Loser", the program will invite residents to participate in a weigh-in at possibly Holy Family Medical Center. Every month or so, participants will return to check out how much weight they have lost.
Those who have lost the most will receive a cash prize of $100 to $200 depending on how many donations are secured.
The program could continue for six months.
"This is something the city can get behind and get people to be more health conscious," said Arredia. "We have yet to work out all the details. We want to get at least 50 people to participate. It's kind of a nice thing for the summer."
Arredia credited Ald. Brookman with coming up with the idea.
It could kick-off in June depending how quickly it can be organized.
"My idea is to improve the quality of life of people," said Brookman Monday night.
Cash contributions are being obtained from local businesses.
