$500,000 Bond Set In Wife Attack

Bond was set at $500,000 yesterday (Tuesday) for an unincorporated Maine Township man accused of attacking his wife with a hammer while she slept.

Djuro Milesic, 55, of 8923 N. Knight Ave., Des Plaines, was charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated domestic battery, and two counts of aggravated battery last Saturday night. He is charged with assaulting his wife, Slavojka Milesic, 47, last Friday while she was asleep in the couple's apartment. Authorities say her husband hit her several times in the head with a hammer. As of early this week, she was in "grave condition" at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, said Cook County Sheriff's police. A spokesman for the hospital declined to release any information about Mrs. Milesic citing confidentiality requirements. In order to be set free, Milesic would have to post 10% or $50,000 cash.

The alleged attack is the third horrific incident reported in unincorporated Maine Township within the last year. All three incidents are believed to have occurred within only a few blocks from each other.

Less than two weeks ago, Elmyr Lawson, 37, of 9205 Potter Rd., was charged with two counts of first degree murder after allegedly suffocating his five year old daughter, Kae Cassandra. He allegedly became upset because she had messed up her toys in the family condominium while he was baby-sitting. Nearly a year ago, five year old Melanie Beltran died after allegedly suffering abuse at her home at 8992 Kennedy Dr., said authorities. Melanie's mother, Mila Petrov, 29, was charged with first degree murder on Mar. 17, 2007. Less than a month later, Carlos Beltran, 31, Melanie's father, was also charged in the murder. Kennedy Drive is located only about six blocks west of Knight Avenue north of Dempster Street and Potter Road.

According to Sheriff's police, Mr. Milesic, who is unemployed, reported his behavior to authorities. Police found his wife unconscious and injured in the couple's bed.

Milesic was scheduled to attend a bond hearing in Skokie court on Monday. However, the hearing was delayed a day in order to locate a Serbian interpreter to help with communication between the accused and the court.

Police did not say what prompted the attack.
