INVASION

Five men allegedly broke into an apartment in the 1100 block of Holiday Lane at 11:23 p.m. May 17 and beat the resident. The 41-year-old victim told police he was washing clothes when they broke through his door. They allegedly began punching him while yelling about money. The man pushed his way outside, but the men caught him and punched him again before fleeing. The victim told police he knew the suspects, but did not have their names. Officers are still investigating the incident.

RETRIEVED

A 21-year-old man helped recover a woman's purse after a burglary to her vehicle at 1:12 a.m. May 19. She told police she left her vehicle unlocked while it was parked at a gas station in the 2000 block of South Mannheim Road. When she returned a few minutes later, she realized her purse was missing from the front seat. The man was across the street making a telephone call and allegedly witnessed the burglary. After speaking to the woman, he located the suspect in the 2000 block of Chestnut Street and returned the purse to the woman, he told police. The woman's wallet containing a driver's license and $50 cash was not in the purse when he returned it to her, she said.

ARRESTS

An alleged retail theft led to drug charges against a Skokie woman at 7:36 p.m. May 17. Lolita R. Loyd, 40, of 9058 Bennett St. #2, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. She and Maurice D. Mayo, 36, of 2002 Darrow Ave., Evanston, were also charged with retail theft. They allegedly left a store in the 700 block of West Golf Road without paying for a bottle of tequila valued at $56.94. Officers stopped them nearby and allegedly recovered the bottle from under the front seat of their vehicle. During a search, police also allegedly recovered suspected marijuana and rolling papers in Loyd's purse.

Michael R. Muranski, 25, of 10130 Hartford Court #GA, Schiller Park, was charged with possession of hypodermic syringes, no proof of insurance, loud muffler, and disobeying a traffic control device. Police arrested him during a traffic stop at 4:08 p.m. May 18 in the 1400 block of Miner Street. The officer allegedly recovered two syringes from a pocket in his driver's door.

ALCOHOL

ARRESTS

Police arrested three men at 5:12 p.m. May 17 after they allegedly drove a Jeep over grass and struck a tree in the 500 block of North Waikiki Drive. Officers charged Tyler R. Swanson, 19, of 927 Golf Cul de Sac, an 18-year-old Hoffman Estates man, and an 18-year-old Des Plaines man with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. The driver, the 18-year-old from Hoffman Estates, was also cited for traffic violations. Police located the men trying to repair the damage on the vehicle. All three allegedly tried to deny the accident or driving the vehicle, but the owner finally allegedly admitted the truth to officers, according to the police report.

THEFTS

An unknown man fled Sam's Club, 101 W. Oakton St., without paying for a freezer bag and other items inside at 4 p.m. May 17. An employee saw the action on a surveillance camera when the man left the store through an emergency exit. A witness outside the store saw the man run into the Dover Point Condominium complex north of Oakton Street.

Jose F. Benavides-Carranza, 27, of 1884 S. Mannheim Rd., Des Plaines, was charged with retail theft at 8:43 p.m. May 16. An officer saw him walking on Ellinwood Street near Lee Street when he allegedly reached into a bush and pulled out a plastic shopping bag. The officer stopped him for investigation and found the bag to allegedly contain a can of beer and a bottle of wine. Benavides-Carranza allegedly told the officer he purchased the items at Shop N Save in Metropolitan Square earlier in the evening. A review of surveillance tapes at the store showed him allegedly paying for the can of beer but not the wine valued at $13.49, police said.

Ricardo Rivera, 41, of 10495 Carol Court, Rosemont, was charged with felony retail theft at 6:10 a.m. May 18. Police apprehended him at Jewel Food Store, 819 S. Elmhurst Rd., after he allegedly tried to leave without paying for cigarettes and tequila valued at $622.18.

BURGLARIES

AND THEFTS

Someone broke a window and took electronic equipment and $80 cash from a red 2007 Jeep Commander in the 2900 block of River Road. The burglary occurred between 1:30 and 9 p.m. May 16.

Tools and electronic equipment valued at $4,450 were taken from a blue 2005 GMC Savana in the 900 block of Lee Street between 1:15 and 1:45 p.m. May 16.

A home was entered in the 600 block of East Lincoln Avenue between 6:15 and 10:45 p.m. May 15. Reported taken was jewelry valued at $20,500, three purses, a wallet with a driver's license, credit cards, and $150 cash, and three garage door openers.

A man in his 20s took a bicycle from an apartment storage locker in the 600 block of Colonial Drive at 5 p.m. May 13. The owner saw him fleeing the scene and chased him in a car to the 800 block of Elmhurst Road where the suspect dropped the bike and escaped on foot. Three other storage lockers were also opened but police did not know if anything was missing from them.

Someone took a radar detector and an mp3 player from a silver 2001 Ford Taurus in the 1200 block of Rand Road between noon May 10 and 4 p.m. May 16.

A window was broken and a global positioning system taken from a silver 2007 Chrysler 300 in the 2300 block of South Mannheim Road between 6 and 11:24 p.m. May 19.

Someone broke a window of a house in the 1600 block of Elm Street and grabbed a purse and a wallet from a kitchen counter at 2:11 a.m. May 21. The homeowner told police she heard the window break but the items were gone by the time she came downstairs. The items contained driver's licenses, credit cards, checks, and keys.

Someone spray-painted graffiti on a trailer in the 300 block of North Third Avenue between 4 p.m. May 15 and 7 a.m. May 16.

Graffiti was spray-painted on a building in the 700 block of East Golf Road between 11:30 p.m. May 15 and 8:30 a.m. May 16.

Sugar was poured into the gas tank of a beige 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck and tried to pry open the gas tank door on a gray 2007 Honda Accord in the 1800 block of East Algonquin Road between 7 p.m. May 19 and 4 p.m. May 20.

Someone cut electric, air, and fuel lines on a white 2001 Volvo semi-tractor and the brake lines on a semi-trailer in the 1800 block of Elmhurst Road between noon May 18 and 9:30 a.m. May 19.

A building was spray-painted in the 1500 block of Everett Avenue between 11 p.m. May 17 and 4:45 p.m. May 18.
