The Rock Is Back

Des Plaines' most prolific filmmaker David "The Rock" Nelson will show his "monster movies" on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m., at the Portage Theater on N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago as part of the Six Corners Monster Film Festival. The timing may be perfect with Halloween being a day later.

Nelson will be there live to introduce the movies, which include "The Mummy 1993 A.D.," a monster comedy, followed by what he calls his feature hit, "The Devil Ant."

"A giant ant that eats radiation and gets big," said Nelson, describing the plot. "Part of it was filmed under the viaduct near Methodist Campground."

Nelson said it's been a dream of his to take part in the Monster Film Festival, and he never thought it would come true until now.

Nelson's films are known for their low budgets and amateur casts of actors, but his work has been featured in several national monster magazines as well as on television shows such as "The Daily Show" and "The WGN Morning News."

He is currently working on editing his latest series, "The Killer Cicadas," and its sequel "Attack of the Giant Cicadas," for which he caught 500 cicadas and ate some of them.

Nelson has made over 100 films, and got his nickname as a former Golden Gloves boxer.
