Paul Allen, 525 Webford Ave., filed the formal objection to petitions of candidate Peter Tatera earlier this week. Tatera is running against Beauvais, one of City Council's longest serving current members.
A hearing of the three-member Des Plaines Electoral Board has tentatively been scheduled for Monday, Feb. 7 in City Hall at 9 a.m. The board's membership consists of Mayor Tony Arredia, City Clerk Donna McAllister, and Ald. Tom Christiansen (2d), City Council's most senior member. They will hear Allen's complaint Monday and then decide whether to allow Tatera's name on the Apr. 5 ballot.
Allen said yesterday (Thursday) that when he recently noticed that Tatera had filed only six petitions more than the minimum 69 required to be placed on the ballot he questioned whether all the signatures and forms were valid.
"Anybody should have a 10 to 15% safety valve," said Allen. "Some of the signatures were printed and some you couldn't read." He added that his ultimate goal is if a determination is made that more than six signatures are invalid than Tatera's name should not be included on the Apr. 5 ballot.
As it currently stands, the only potential race out of six city offices up for election Apr. 5 is in the 1st ward. No one has stepped forward to challenge Arredia, McAllister or aldermen Laura Murphy (3d), Carla Brookman (5th), and Don Smith (7th).
"I have nothing against Mr. Tatera," said Allen. "I've worked on campaigns for Ald. Beauvais before and I was going to help her this time."
