Holiday Films On The Way To Theater

The Des Plaines Theater Preservation Society will present two holiday film weekends this December.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5 the society will present an evening of Max Fleischer Christmas cartoons and the classic 1935 film "Scrooge."

English stage actors Sir Seymour Hicks and Maurice Evans star in this retelling of the Charles Dickens Christmas story.

Then, at 2 p.m. on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19, the society will present a Hometown Holiday celebration.

Carolers, musical performances and sing-a-longs will complement presentations of the original "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" animated cartoon and the 1947 film "Miracle on 34th Street" starring Maureen O'Hara as a no-nonsense Macy's executive, John Payne as the young lawyer who defends Kris Kringle in court and the young Natalie Wood plays the daughter who teaches her mother the meaning of faith.

Musicians and artists of Maine West High School will also participate.

The Sunday, Dec. 19 showing features David Drazin of the Gene Siskel Film Center.

Also, the theater preservation recently hosted a "Rock the Turkey" Thanksgiving-Eve concert. The concert featured indie, punk and pop bands.

The Des Plaines theater, 1476 Miner St., is available to rent for birthday parties, special events and fundraisers.

"We are going to have carolers out front and an orchestra inside," said Paul Saletnik of the Theater Preservation Society. "We hope to see a big crowd attend with people of all ages."
