Elephants May Not Make This Year's Republican Picnic

Gary Warner is going to have to look a little harder if there are going to be elephants at this year's 23d annual Northwest Suburban Republican Family Picnic.

Two of the last three years, Warner arranged for elephant performances from John Cuneo's McHenry County circus training facility. They were unable to appear last year, however, because the elephants had tested positive for tuberculosis.

"We were going to pay $2,400 for two hours," said Warner, who organizes the picnic. "The last few years we've had them they've been a great attraction. They've done tricks, everyone has liked them."

The federal government is attempting to shut down Cuneo's business for various animal neglect charges.

"We haven't been able to find any other elephants," said Warner. "There were some in New Jersey, but that company wanted $4,000 because they would have to be moved so far. We don't have that kind of money in our budget."

Warner said he might have to settle for some other exotic animals instead.

"We might have to settle for some camels," he said. "Just as long as we don't end up with donkeys."

This year's picnic will take place at Busse Woods at Arlington Heights Road and Higgins Road, Groves five through 11 on Sunday, Aug. 3.
