Towns Still Need To Iron Out Meijer Agreement

By DWIGHT ESAU

It will take some time yet, but indications are that the complicated plan to bring a Meijer store to Rolling Meadows and Arlington Hts. will get done.

Both communities are mentioned in connection with this project because the site for the huge new department store is at the southwest corner of Golf and Algonquin Roads, at the boundary of Arlington Hts. and Rolling Meadows.

The store will be located in Rolling Meadows, but an access road to it from Algonquin Road will be located in Arlington Hts.

Robin Ward, assistant village attorney for Arlington Hts., said this week that, since the village board approved the inter-governmental agreement for the access road and acquisition of two small business properties in December, the owners of the business properties, as well as other businesses nearby that will be affected by the project, will not oppose anything.

All that remains is to iron out details of agreements, she said.

The two businesses to be acquired and eventually replaced are a Midas Muffler Shop and a Pearle Vision store. The latter facility has been closed for sometime. The owners of these two properties will reportedly dis-annex from Rolling Meadows and annex to Arlington Hts., to expedite the construction of the access road, which will be located where their properties now are located.

The agreement also specifies that Arlington Hts. will incur no expense in this process. The access road will be built and maintained by the City of Rolling Meadows.

The Meijer project is the latest step by Rolling Meadows in the renovation of the Meadows Mall and nearby Commons shopping centers. By the year 2003, this area will have been mostly vacated and replaced by a Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and now Meijer.

The inter-governmental agreement calls for infrastructure work, access road-building, and construction work to be completed by certain dates.
