Local businesses are projected to gain millions in additional revenue this fall when the Cup, one of horse racing's most prestigious events, comes to Arlington on Oct. 26.
Village President Arlene Mulder recently gained village board approval for the task force, which will include village and library officials and business leaders.
Chairing it will be Trustee Mark Toljanic. Members will be Nancy Kluz, village director of public information; Sharon Romack, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce; Deb Meskauskas, library director of public relations; Kris Stabler of the Arlington Park staff; businessman Jack Whisler, and Neil Scheufler, a member of the village's special events commission.
"This group will, among other things, join with the community in planning special events during Cup race week that will enhance the event," said Village Mgr. Bill Dixon.
Toljanic noted when his appointment was approved that he is "thrilled' to be on the task force, and that the group will seek citizen input and make a spot available on the village's website to gather information. "We may look for a few more individuals in the village to assist us," he said.
More than 50,000 visitors from throughout the world are expected to come to Arlington Hts. on Oct. 26, and the week before, for the Breeder's Cup, which is the second-largest event in thoroughbred racing, behind only the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Arlington Park officials are now developing a plan that will expand seating at the track from its present 12,500 to about 50,000 for race day. They also are working on a plan to find parking spaces for the thousands of cars that will come to the Arlington Park area.
